Media Releases 2013

Posted on 30/08/2013 by Phillip Island Nature Parks

The east stairs at Smiths Beach are scheduled for removal next week following their closure in December 2012 due to a continual shift in foundations and concerns for public safety.

Access to Smiths Beach remains at the ramp and west boardwalk stairs and is not impacted by the closure of the east stairs or their removal.

Phillip Island Nature Parks has consulted Smiths Beach Beachcombers Association, the Bass Coast Shire Council and local residents regarding the stair removal. A viewing platform will remain at the top allowing visitors to see the beach and assess surf conditions.

In the next six months Phillip Island Nature Parks will undertake the development of a Key Area Plan for Woolamai and south coast beaches as identified in the Environment Plan 2012-17. All beach access and related infrastructure, including at Smiths Beach, will be part of the planning process. The plan’s development will involve extensive consultation with the Council and local community. Community consultation sessions will be advertised through local papers.
