Key updates from Phillip Island Nature Parks' December Board meeting.
Phillip Island Nature Parks’ Board has hailed Victoria’s Regional Tourism Strategy 2013-2016, released by the State Government in early December, as a win for Phillip Island Nature Parks and the region.
“The Board is pleased to see the Nature Parks and Bass Coast region are well referenced in the plan, signalling an ongoing commitment to encourage visitors to explore beyond Melbourne and experience Victoria’s best natural attractions,” Jeff Floyd, Board chair, said.
At its December 19 meeting, the Board also confirmed the appointment of an Indigenous trainee environmental ranger - a key commitment of the Nature Parks’ Reconciliation Action Plan. The traineeship is offered under a partnership with AFL SportsReady and Surfing Victoria. The trainee will undertake on the job training alongside a Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management at Chisholm Institute of Tafe.
Oil Spill training
The Board also discussed the preliminary outcomes of the first training session of Exercise Pinguino, conducted in November and designed to enhance the Nature Parks capabilities in responding to a marine pollution event. The next stage of the training will be conducted in May and involves a field exercise.
Churchill Island Key Area Plan
The Churchill Island Key Area Plan will be released to the public for discussion in March 2014 as part of an open community session. Details will be published through local media. An exciting future direction is emerging under the plan for Churchill Island with clear goals being established for conservation, interpretation, access and infrastructure.
The Board has applauded the work of environment ranger Scott Campbell who retired in mid-December after nearly 16 years of service with the Nature Parks. Scott’s knowledge and dedication have been instrumental in a number of positive conservation outcomes across the parks, particularly at Churchill Island.
