Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith today congratulated Stella Axarlis AM on 10 years of service on the Phillip Island Nature Parks Board of Management at a ceremony held at the Nobbies Centre, Phillip Island.

Mr Smith praised Ms Axarlis’ work on the Board.

“Stella has made a lasting contribution to the management of Phillip Island Nature Parks and her skills and knowledge have been of enormous value to the organisation. I congratulate her on her 10 years of exceptional service.”

Ms Axarlis thanked her fellow Board members, past and present, and expressed her gratitude for the recognition and opportunity to work with a great team.

Jeffrey Floyd, Chair of the Nature Parks Board, paid tribute to her contribution to the Nature Parks.

“Stella is a valued member of the Nature Parks Board and has been an integral part of the organisation’s progress and community engagement.”

Ms Axarlis joined the Phillip Island Nature Parks Board in July 2003. During her time on the Board she has seen the implementation of numerous key initiatives, including the finalisation of the State Government’s Summerlands Housing Buyback scheme in 2010, the expansion of conservation, research and ecotourism activities across the Nature Parks, and the development of a strategic management plan that sets the future direction of the organisation to 2017.

In addition to her Board work, Ms Axarlis is also President of the Friends of Churchill Island Society and Chair of the Nature Parks’ Community Advisory and Education Advisory Committees. She has also been an internationally acclaimed opera singer and managing director of a successful engineering company.

In 1998 Ms Axarlis became a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of her contribution to training, business and children with disabilities. In 2011 she was presented with the inaugural, preeminent Lifetime Achievement Award, Australia’s most prestigious vocational education training (VET) award, for her distinguished service and lasting contribution to VET practice.
