RECONCILIATION EVENTS 2018

Bass Coast is proud to support Reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Phillip Island Nature Parks, Bass Coast Shire Council, Bunurong Land Council, Westernport Water, Bass Coast South Gippsland Reconciliation Group and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community are working together to present a shared program of activities to acknowledge significant events in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander calendar:

National Sorry Day/Day of Healing on Saturday 26 May
and
National Reconciliation Week 27 May - 3 June

National Sorry Day, Day of Healing is an important day of learning, sharing and reflection and was one of the key recommendations of the ‘Bringing them Home’ report tabled in Parliament in May 1997. The report was based on an inquiry by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. Sorry Day offers the Community the opportunity to be involved in activities to learn about and acknowledge the impact of the policies of forcible removal on Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.

National Reconciliation Week ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery’
This week-long celebration builds on respectful, shared relationships and reflects on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey:

• The 1967 referendum where more than 90% of Australian voters chose ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

• The historic Mabo decision where the High Court of Australia decided that terra nullius should not have been applied to Australia. This decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land – rights that existed before the British arrived and can still exist today.

This year’s theme explores history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered. This National Reconciliation Week, you are invited to learn more about the Australian story.
