Phillip Island Nature Parks, home to the world-famous Penguin Parade, has spread its wings and launched a new island-wide bird tour guaranteed to get any birder in a flutter.
The new Island Bird Tour offers twitchers a day of bird watching across a variety of Phillip Island’s bushland, wetland and coastal habitats. The tour is led by eco accredited rangers with excellent local bird knowledge.
Phillip Island Nature Parks, only 90 minutes from Melbourne, is home to over 200 bird species and is an IUCN Special Bird Area. Wetlands within the park are protected under the Ramsar Convention and are home to a variety of migratory birds including Bar-tailed Godwits, Curlew Sandpipers, Whimbrels and Red-necked Stints.
Approximately one million Short-tailed Shearwaters call Phillip Island home during the spring and summer months. In winter birds such as the Swift Parrot, Flame Robin and Swamp Harrier return, seeking refuge from the colder climes of Tasmania. During spring bush birds such as the Dusky Woodswallow and Yellow-faced Honeyeater can be seen.
Binoculars and a high powered spotting scope are included in the tour or participants are welcome to bring their own. The tour begins at dawn and concludes with premium penguin viewing at the Penguin Parade.
