Phillip Island Nature Parks Announced Finalist in World Environment Awards 2015
Philip Island Nature Parks has been announced as a finalist in this year’s World Environment Day Awards.
The Nature Parks’ efforts in saving Phillip Island’s Summerland Peninsula is one of five finalists from across Australia in the awards’ Biodiversity category.
“We are very proud to be nominated as finalists in these highly recognised awards,” said Matthew Jackson, Phillip Island Nature Parks Chief Executive Officer.
“Our 25-year commitment to the preservation of one of Victoria’s significant natural environments and its wildlife on the Summerland Peninsula is a major achievement.”
“Today the penguin population has doubled and the special environment of the Summerland Peninsula has been protected for all Victorians and Australians. The Summerland Peninsula Master Plan details our 20-year vision for this special place and our application for the area to be listed on the National Estate is pending.”
The project began in 1985 when the State Government announced the ‘Penguin Protection Plan’ – the cornerstone being the long-term buy-back of Summerland Housing Estate and restoration for penguins, coastal environmental values and wildlife.
The project objectives were to buy back the 776 privately-owned allotments on the housing estate (180 houses and 600 vacant blocks), rehabilitate the area and save the penguin population through management and research initiatives including predator control, traffic management and ongoing monitoring.
Over a quarter of a century later, the project is complete and the Peninsula’s very special coastal environment and wildlife populations have been restored.
Aussie ingenuity to save the environment was a key feature of this year’s finalists in Australia's top environment awards. The Awards are held in conjunction with World Environment Day and celebrate the innovative and outstanding environmental programs and initiatives across Australia, as well as the critical work of environmental leaders.
The World Environment Day Awards 2015 winners will be announced at the Presentation Dinner to be held at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne, on Friday June 5.
