What’s on for the first annual Winter Whale Weekend 

It’s almost time to welcome the migrating whales back to our coastline, so Wildlife Coast Cruises, Phillip Island Nature Parks and the Dolphin Research Institute have joined forces to bring you a host of activities, information and fun, along with the first of the winter whale cruises during the upcoming Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. 


Who eats who?
Learn about marine ecosystems and food webs with Nature Parks’ researcher Dr Andre Chiaradia, then enjoy a great kids’ activity and make some crafty marine critters with ranger Kim.

When: Saturday, 11 June – 11.00am to 1.00pm

Where: WWF Antarctic Journey, Nobbies Centre

Cost: Antarctic Journey entry ticket – Adult $18, Child (4-15) $9, Family (2A2C) $45 

Whales & dolphins in Victorian waters

Join cetacean researcher David Donnelly from the Dolphin Research Institute as he shares his expertise on biology, population trends and conservation.

When: Saturday, 11 June – 2.00pm to 4.00pm

Where: Nobbies Centre Function Room (upstairs)

Cost: Free entry 


Climb inside a 19 metre long inflatable humpback whale to become inspired and truly appreciate just how massive these creatures are. Learn about the fascinating world of whales with the aid of bones, teeth, amazing research footage and experienced marine educators to tell unforgettable stories about how a diverse range of marine animals lives off our coast.

When: Sunday, 12 June – 2.00pm, 3.00pm, 4.00pm

Where: YMCA Leisure Centre, 10-14 Church St, Cowes

Cost: Free entry – Bookings recommended 


Grab the popcorn and watch some amazing nature documentaries including:

DisneyNature’s Oceans(2.00pm) – A wonderland filled with mystery, beauty and power

Sonic Sea(4.00pm) – The impact of industrial and military ocean noise on whales and other marine life

Whales – An Unforgettable Journey (5.15pm) – Visit remote locations to study whales in their natural habitat

When: Sunday, 12 June – from 2.00pm

Where: Parish Hall, Thompson Ave, Cowes

Cost: Free entry 


Join in the search for the majestic Southern Whales during their annual migration and enjoy the best views of Phillip Island’s scenic coastline on this fascinating and unique cruise. Enjoy the sight of thousands of fur seals at Seal Rocks, shy Albatrosses along the Southern coast, along with regular dolphin sightings as you seek out the whales. Circumnavigate Phillip Island and enjoy morning tea and freshly prepared lunch on board.

When: Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th, Monday 13th June – 9.30am – 1.30pm
