New Penguin Parade Visitor Centre waddles one step closer to reality

The vision for the new Penguin Parade Visitor Centre is another step closer to becoming a reality as Phillip Island Nature Parks calls for expressions of interest for the construction of this landmark building.

With a design that has been overseen by the Nature Parks’ own panel of professionals, as well as the design review panel of the office of the Victorian Government architect, the new centre will complement the natural environment as it nestles below the horizon, visible only from the distance and from select viewpoints.

The siting of the building will provide a connection between three distinct landscape types of basalt bluff, coastal dune and wetland, with each façade of the building designed to reach out to, or bring in the adjacent environment.

“We are delighted with the design of the new building, and the overall progress of this exciting project,” said Phillip Island Nature Parks CEO Catherine Basterfield. “We have now called for expressions of interest for the Centre’s construction and will commence the rigorous selection process to ensure a successful development.”

The $58 million project is a key component of the Summerland Peninsula Masterplan, and has been made possible through $48.2 million of funding from the State Government of Victoria, with a $10 million contribution from the Nature Parks. The new centre will offer significantly enhanced visitor amenities and a range of new interpretive activities to provide a special experience for both day and evening visitors.

“In addition to the new Visitor Centre’s aesthetic appeal and enhanced visitor experience, this building will also provide us with some outstanding environmental outcomes, such as the restoration of 6.7ha of habitat for the penguins, and a major step towards the Nature Parks’ ultimate goal of becoming carbon, energy and waste neutral,” Ms Basterfield concluded.

The Visitor Centre is due to open in late 2019. All documentation for the Expression of Interest is available at
