Smiths Beach (east) Infrastructure Upgrades

Smiths Beach (east) Infrastructure Upgrades

Phillip Island Nature Parks is delivering infrastructure upgrades at the eastern access to Smiths Beach.

Upgrades aim to improve access to the beach for ongoing lifesaving services and public use.

Upgrade works on both structures will address extensive corrosion that has occurred due to the beachside location. The stairway and landing adjacent to the WBSLSC Rescue Base will be rebuilt, and the accessibility ramp will also undertake repairs and maintenance including replacement of decking, bolts and brackets.

Improved material choices are aimed at increasing sustainability and reducing the maintenance demands in such a highly corrosive environment.

The works will occur outside of the peak visitation period and lifesaving season, with construction to commence early May and expected to be completed in August 2026.

During this time, closures are required during specified periods however, access to Smiths Beach will remain via the western beach access stairway.

The works are funded via the Coastal Public Access and Risk (CPAR) Grant Program 2024-25 and a contribution from Phillip Island Nature Parks. The CPAR Grant Program delivers funding to coastal Crown land managers, including voluntary committees of management and local government, to reduce coastal risk and improve public access.

We thank the community for their understanding during short-term closures to allow work to be conducted safely and efficiently and ultimately enable long-term safety and benefits for all users.
