Moonar'mia (Churchill Island) offers students a very different experience from Nature Parks' wildlife-focused locations. Here, students can explore the connections between Country, people, farming, history and the natural environment in one place.
As you explore the island, look closely at how the landscape has changed and how people have used and managed it over time. Students can discover historic buildings and farming infrastructure while also exploring areas of woodland, wetlands, coastline and open farmland.
The island provides opportunities to observe a range of wildlife and investigate how different habitats exist alongside areas shaped by human activity. Depending on the season, students may encounter birds, insects, reptiles and other wildlife as they explore.
Moonar'mia is also an opportunity to recognise the continuing connection of Bunurong People to Country and to consider how people have interacted with and cared for this landscape over generations.

Encourage students to look for evidence of both natural processes and human influence. What features of the landscape are natural? What has been changed or built? What has remained? What can the landscape tell us about the people who have lived and worked here?
The island works particularly well for place-based learning, allowing students to connect environmental, geographical, historical and cultural perspectives as they explore.

Dress for the conditions: Churchill Island is an outdoor environment with exposed areas, walking tracks and changing weather conditions. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
